After a really crazy school year that was more emotionally draining than it was mentally / physically exhausting, I took a few days off work to reenergize and seek new sources of inspiration. For eleven days, I spent my time really appreciating the present, enjoying conversation, and pampering myself with good food and massages. It was a self-imposed holiday and everyday was a meeting with nothingness. I could literally feel the weight of the school year lift through the days as my self-imposed holiday gave me the recharge I was going to need to come back to work in full throttle.
If you're beginning to feel burnt out, I suggest you take your leaves, pamper yourself alittle and BREATHE. Sometimes weekends aren't enough, really, and you will need to get out there to feed your mind with new things. I would also encourage you to travel alone or spend time alone if you decide to travel with a group to appreciate what it feels like to not have to occupy your mind with useless matters or engage in random conversation. Sometimes its good to be able to NOT think and free your mind completely.
I know what you're thinking, how do you really free your mind? Well, here are a few personal tried and tested strategies:
1. Sit in the most comfortable manner
2. Look out into the horizon and pay attention to nothing but the view ahead of you. What do you notice? Allow yourself to DRIFT
3. If you choose to close your eyes, picture a blank slate. A white board with NOTHING written on it. Now picture white light going through every inch of your body. Do this regularly and you will find yourself doing it almost automatically when trying to clear your mind for a moment
4. Keep a playlist of classical music/ lauds / jazz. Lauds are perfect for the prayerful. Use this time in mindfulness reflection. Classical / Jazz music is another way of allowing yourself to get creative and pay attention to the notes instead.
5. Consciously tell yourself to shut up.
Take a self-imposed holiday. Trust me, you will not regret it. And for the sake of nothingness, I hope that you learn how to free your mind and find the inspiration that you need.
Best of luck!
