BIG WEEKEND SEASON 2: Bolinao-Batad roadtrip (Part 3)

Soon we arrived to our first destination: Bolinao. We took the cheapest and so far the cleanest place, Dutch Beach Resort, just near the beach. We enjoyed just relaxing under the sun, swimming in the blue water and listening to the continuous waves. But what made the day so enjoyable was the Public Beach of Patar which was 5 miles away our resort (and located in the very 'nose' of Luzon) because of the animated waves, party people, and the beautiful sunset reflecting from the sea.

Star-gazing at the shore
It was sundown, and we had to return to Dutch resort before dark. I was soaking wet and felt cold, but ironically it made me forget the chill when we rode a tricycle back to our place. While looking at the view from  outside, I reminisced the fun we had. I couldn't forget the beautiful waves!
Back at the resort, we ate sardines for dinner and took a bath one by one. We didn't have hot bath but the cold water wasn't that bad and because I was already wet, I didn't shiver much. Afterwards we gathered together to the sandy shore outside the cottages. We lied down and looked at the sky. It was extremely dark because there were no lights around, literally. But the sky was cloudy so I failed to see some stars.

"Oh God, please show me a star..even just one," I whispered.

We waited for a star to come out, but there was none.
so the boys just did their favorite pastime: Play videogames and talk about nothing else but videogames!
I was getting bored...I couldn't see a thing above. But what else could I do? Besides, I'm starting to like my 'sand bed'...
Suddenly the clouds broke and a number of stars came out! I was so happy to see them that I called for the boys' attention. They were awed as well. Gradually, the clouds disappeared and the sky was filled with stars, like upsidedown citylights. It was the most-beautiful galaxy of stars I've ever seen in my life.

DAY TWO: THE ROADTRIP CONTINUES

Wake up, boys! It's 5:30am!
According to Ate Winnie, the innkeeper of the resort, the van terminal to Dagupan starts at 7am so we had to be there on time. So whether we liked it or not, we had to get up.
No more taking a bath for us because we had to pack up, eat breakfast and leave. The lazy boys did their part, except that they did it quite slowly.
It was 6:30am and we had to go. I walked to the seashore for the last time to bid goodbye to the astounding waves. I'm gonna miss Bolinao for sure.

LooOOoOong Roadtrip
We arrived at the van terminal and squeezed ourselves inside the vehicle. It took us almost 2 hours just to arrive at the destination. We took another bus at Victory Liner Dagupan at around 10am. And while waiting for the bus to leave, there were numerous vendors coming inside the vehicle to sell their goods. I got attracted to this apple that one vendor showed me. I thought it wouldn't be appropriate to eat without being washed yet so I didn't buy one. As I checked for the boys I saw them buying nuts, drinks and a burger! I even saw Ian eating the apple the vendor had!
Four long hours made us spend looking from outside the window and observing the people, passing vehicles, provincial bungalows, mountains and rice fields. It later exhausted us and wished that someday the bus would stop. Our stomachs were growling, and as we looked at people's heads they seemed to form into burgers and mountains as Hershey's kisses. Soon we found ourselves slowly spinning around the long zigzag road uphill. And after struggling against our wild imagination our wish was granted--the bus finally stopped. In front of us now was this checkpoint called CVV station. There were several souvenir goods, sweets and fruits displayed. I wasn't really looking for fruits right now, I'm after meat! I want BARBEQUE!
And just after screaming the magic word my wish came true again! On the front area was this barbeque stand where a crowd stood. I bought a couple of sticks that cost Php25 each. It was deliciously good because the meat was tender and there were no beef fats added. It was the tastiest barbeque I ever tasted in my life!

Solano break
Another couple of hours passed and we were deeply exhausted. There were a lot of puke on the floor (thanks, kids) and rain shower kept on pouring outside. Soon the bus stopped at a small town called Solano where it would probably give us another couple of hours more to Banawe. Shall we move on?
It's 5pm according to Jophet's watch. If we continue our route to Banawe, it might take us forever. In fact, we were dizzy enough to catch another zigzag road. So I guess staying here for the night would be the best thing to do.
We decided to take a tricycle ride to the nearest hotel where we could spend the night. The driver took us to an inn with a yellowgreen and royalblue sign that read "AM/PM". As we entered the place, we were pleased to see its comfortable ambiance--a 3-floor building with furnished wooden doors, gold-plated knobs and clean surroundings. We took 2 rooms for 3 people each; door number 22 and 23. As we entered, we were happy to see a well-cleaned airconditioned room, dim lights, a ceiling fan and hot shower. There's even cable TV! And guess what--all these pampering for Php600 a night. That meant Php200 a night for each of us. Now that's cheap!

Dinner at a carinderia
Soon the moon was up, and there was silence all over. The other boys took a nap while some of them never stopped playing their favorite videogames. At last, everyone decided to take something to eat. We went outside to walk and see what's cooking. Just a few steps away AM/PM hotel stood a carinderia nearby. It caught much of our curiosity to see a lot of people coming in this food stall so we thought it might be one of the best in Solano. We entered and sat inside. We ordered beef noodles, congee and beef tapa. For just 5 minutes our food was served. And when we tasted our orders we also finished them in a few minutes! I enjoyed the beef noodles a lot. Well, the boys not only loved the food, they also enjoyed the view where some chics ate near us!

BIG WEEKEND SEASON 2: Bolinao-Batad roadtrip (Part 2)

After several hours of conflict and craze, the boys and I finally got to the bus. But unknown to us, another eerie moment headed our way--our vehicle took us to "Nowhere Road". The pathway was pitchblack and only the headlights provided the way. It was a creepy night and we couldn't wait to get to the real destination. Bolinao, where art thou!?

End of the road
Suddenly, the bus stopped. A strong light struck our eyes. Is this heaven? Are we...d-
No, we're not dead. We've just arrived another Victory Liner terminal. It read "Alaminos".

What!? Did you say Alaminos?

Yes, it was indeed Alaminos city--and not Bolinao.

As far as I remember, Ian went to "furious mode" because of the bus ticket confusion. Instead of taking us to Bolinao, the ticket lady in the Cubao terminal gave us the pass to Alaminos city. But that's alright; in fact it was just a few miles away our wanted destination. But since it was still too dark to carry on to Bolinao (it was 4am when we arrived the chartered city), we killed some time at the terminal. However it was taking too long and the boys just couldn't wait to get to Bolinao. So we decided to ride a tricycle and proceeded to the desired resort.
While we had another joyride via tricycle, the place was still dark, and just like the passenger bus, only the headlights provided the way. Not for long, we arrived at Dutch Beach Resort, one of the cheapest resorts in Bolinao. Fortunately the crew was always ready to accommodate a customer. We took the cheapest room for 6 that cost us Php1,800 (offpeak price). While waiting for the sun to rise, I walked towards the seashore and listened to the waves. The wind was blowing hard, and it was extremly cold!

Enjoying the sea
Soon the sun was up. We took pictures together and enjoyed observing the waves as the tide went down. There were some seaweed and rocks on the shallow parts but the water was crystal clear. Afterwards we bought food from the nearby sari-sari store and we cooked fried eggs, longganisa and beef tapa (that tasted like tocino). The boys ate like construction workers who never ate lunch on a long working day!
After breakfast we returned to the beach and jumped into the beautiful sea. And while doing so, I took pictures of us and the place. In the afternoon we took a stroll outside the resort to see what was around Bolinao. We walked through the dusty path where coconut trees stood on each corner (imagine Beverly Hills with coconut trees on the corner instead of its famous palm trees).

Enchanting Cave
It was quite a long way, and not later we saw a sign that read "This way to the Enchanted Cave." The rusty, tilted sign led us to another dusty path, this time going to the right side of the road where no one passed by. It was starting to get creepy. Soon we saw smoke coming on our way literally, and with such curiousity we followed the smoke and found a huge rock that had another sign. It read, "Enchanted Cave, this way" and an arrow pointing to another side. (We felt like Alice who got lost in a forest instead of Wonderland) So we followed the pathway and ended up in an animated place where birds chirped and flew around, garden plants were decorated, and a small fountain stood near us. Is Enchanted cave a resort? Not really. It was just another 'tourist spot' where people could explore the underground cave where you could see nothing but a small well of water. How enchanting.

Disappointed, we all went back to the resort and enjoyed the calm water instead. It took us a while before we cooked lunch because everyone was tired for walking for hours. The boys slept in the cottage like they never wanted to wake up again! Jophet and I stayed near the shore and lingered under the sun. I just love the sound of the waves. I really felt like I was alone, stranded in an island. No one was there at the shore except the two of us. Jophet lied down at the bench and took a nap while I slept on the white sand where the shallow waters touched my legs.
Not long after we decided to do the honor to prepare lunch for the poor, lazy boys. We took 5 slices of pork liempo from the sari-sari store and grilled them outside the cottage. It took several minutes to brown up because we barely had kitchen utensils. But it was alright; in fact we were surrounded with loud party music from the videoke just right next to us. I tried to sing but because I was soaking wet, I was electrified by the mic! So, no chance to sing for now! :-(

Public Beach: the best place to be
Jophet and I returned to our serene hang-out where we relaxed all day long. He suggested that we hit the Public Beach 5 miles away from the resort because he heard that it was the greates place to be. I kind of felt lazy at the moment because I thought I was already at the best place right now. But because the persistent Jophet wouldn't stop, I decided to go. Ian and Allen came to be with us after hearing about the 'greatest place to be' in Bolinao. So we fixed ourselves and prepared to leave for the Public Beach. Not later Carlo and Pao went outside the cottage and joined us too. We took another tricycle ride that cost us P200 both to and fro. When we arrived the place we saw numerous animated people, jumping, dancing and partying together. There were even people recklesly singing at the videoke bar. This place looked like the party zone of Bolinao. And when we walked
closer we saw the beach from afar, and was awed to see the blue sea and crazy people being swept by huge waves! Wow, it was just amazing! The boys couldn't wait so they hurriedly rented an open cottage, threw their clothes off and dived into the sea! I got so envious because I didn't bring my swimsuit, so I dropped my camera next to Pao (he just stayed at the sand), ran and dived into the water as well!

BIG WEEKEND SEASON 2: Bolinao-Batad roadtrip

It's the second time around for my long weekend in North Luzon! Last year in August, I've been to the beautiful old city of Vigan and the adventurous Hundred Islands. I travelled there with 3 French fellows, and we enjoyed our crazy time together, discovering a lot about the places and even knowing each other more. And now my feet is back for another destination, this time in the serene Bolinao beach and the Philippines' own wonder, the Rice terraces in Banawe and Batad.

Check out my funny and crazy experience of my Christmas weekend!

DAY ZERO: Meeting at Cubao Terminal

Leaving my hometown                                                                                            My trip started when I left home at 6pm. I can still picture in my mind the time when I walked out of the house to catch a ride to Alabang. Dad looked at me from afar and never turned back, as if I was not going to return ever again. (Reminds me of the biblical scene from the Parable of the prodigal son!)
Not later I rode a tricycle going outside our village, and then I took the jeep on my way to Metropolis for a bus ride going to Makati. It was an answered prayer for me since the weather was fine and there was little traffic on the road. I lingered at Starbucks coffee at G4 where the cinemas were located. A few minutes, Pao arrived. We had a few chats while waiting for the others. Not later Jophet came, and then we headed to the MRT station going to Cubao.

Wrong station!?
In 15 minutes, we arrived at the place. We went downstairs and found the Victory Liner terminal. To our surprise we didn't see Bolinao in the list of destinations! We called for Ian over the mobile to ask where he bought the tickets (he took 5 tickets in advance to avoid conflict). He said that he 'was' already in the terminal. We looked for him but we couldn't see him. We learned that there were two terminals in Cubao, and Ian was on the other side! (Thanks for the directions, Jophet!)

Let's go!
Soon we arrived at the right terminal and as expected, Ian was there waiting. He was with two guys who were brothers; Carlo and Allen. It was my first time to meet them--they were Ian's very close friends. It was 11pm when we got in the bus because Ian still experienced some complications with the tickets because the counter gave him the wrong schedules! (What a miserable night!)

Finally, we got the right tickets and went inside the bus. We all took the last seats on the back. It was not fully occuppied so some of the boys took a seat for themselves. We were tired so I took a nap and wore my jacket. But the boys were so talkative as if they haven't seen each other for years! And what were they talking about? Videogames. Ian and the brothers even brought their PSP with them. Oh well, boys... nevertheless I have to sleep. I was awake all day!

DAY ONE: BOLINAO FUN

Where is the bus leading us?
I woke up and looked at the windows. It was so dark outside! I couldn't see any lights except for the headlights of the bus that led us the way. It was a spooky trip and I could imagine the entire scene from a horror movie. The bus was shaking a bit as if the parts were going to collapse, and the aircon behind us had this irritating noise. Not later the vehicle stopped at a checkpoint out of nowhere. I couldn't remember where it was, but for sure we were already miles away Manila. We were given 15 minutes to buy food or do anything we want before the bus carried on.

Star-gazing in the bus
Afterwards, we returned back in the bus. The place was still dark. I tried to sleep again for the remaining hours, but Allen poked me and told me to look at the sky. I gazed from the window and was amazed to see so many stars in the sky! It was my first time in my life to see a billion of them hanging in the heavens and it felt like I was inside a planetarium, literally! And while doing so, we already noticed some cottages on the corners. But still there were no post lights! So everytime we passed by a house, they looked abandoned. Where were we--in a ghost town!?
